Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between educational institutions, migrant Roma families from Romania, and local policies in three Italian cities. Particular reference will be made to individuals experiencing precarious housing conditions in the years before the so-called Nomad Emergency and up until the development of the first National Strategy for the Inclusion of Roma, Sinti and Caminanti (Unar, 2012). Based on the analysis of selected life trajectories collected as part of a multi-year international project, the research lists and explores the various forms of interaction between schools, Roma students, and the local context. It then describes how schools promote or hinder schooling and social inclusion through dialogue with local stakeholders, including public administrations, associations, and citizen-led initiatives.
